The June – October technical climbing season on the North Face started well until few weeks ago when several climbers started to complain about rockfalls within the first five to eight pitches. The situation is worse in the morning after sun rise and especially after seven when the rock face receives intense heat from the sun.

A climber almost lost his life recently from a falling rock. He was able to take cover but his right leg was broken above the knee. An evacuation had to be carried out at night, before an early morning helicopter airlift.

KWS strongly advises climbers not to climb right now and should they do so, to be extra careful and to make enquiries on climbing conditions before embarking on a climb.

In case of any incidents, the 24 hrs Mount Kenya National Park Emergency number is 0712294084.
