SUMMARY:Mt. Elgon
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for a Mashujaa weekend trip to Mt. Elgon Na
 tional Park\, a shield volcano in the Rift Valley that straddles the Kenya
 /Uganda border. The summit (caldera) consists of five peaks between 4150 a
 nd 4320m. The hike up takes us through montane forest\, heath and moorland
 \, in one of the most biodiverse parts of Kenya. We're still sketching out
   the details\, but possible activities include:\n\n 	Summiting Sudek (43
 02m)\, the highest point on the Kenyan side\n 	Circumnavigating the peaks\
 n 	Soaking in the hotsprings\n 	Exploring the elephant-carved caves\n 	Lea
 rning about local land issues and the history of the region\n 	Joining up 
 with the Mountain Club of Uganda\n 	Birding\n 	Botanizing in the unique af
 ro-alpine zone\n\nWe plan to leave first thing on Thursday morning\, so th
 at we can hit the trail in the afternoon. After two full days on the mount
 ain\, we'll head back to Nairobi on Sunday.\n\nPark fees are 300/= citizen
