Hello

Just looking for some advice on climbing in Kenya, i will be arriving in Nairobi on the 30th March for a month. I would love to experience some climbing whilst visiting. Can anyone advise the best means of travel to and from crags and which places are best to visit.

Also which kit am i most likely to need, and what can be rented... luggage allowances!

Hi Kay,

I would say the kit would be required if your coming to do technical climbing which i personally do not know much about and hope someone from the MCK will answer that for you. Although i can say Mt. Kenya (6 days would be good) is not technical at all if your going to Lenana. Most places (where you would climb) are accessible by road, you can get public transport - buses - to all places. If your doing something like Mt. Kenya (or a trip longer than one day) would be best to organise through a tour company. Other climbs mostly organised by yourself but MCK have various helpful contacts. You definitely have to do your research prior just to know what you want to do in Kenya. I'm on nkinyanjui@gmail.com if you need more specific info.

Ciao

Sorry on transport, sometimes better to hire a private cab/taxi/safari driver (depending on your budget) for easier access to places because a bus would obviously drop you a distance from the actual place your climbing. Also MCK sometimes do like group climbs so i am sure they car pool (althuogh i stand to be corrected because i havent yet gone for one of their group functions... YET :-) you can also check the calendar of activities page)

Hi Kay

THought i'd chip in on the technical climbing side of things. There are a few crags close to Nairobi- two of which you could get to by public transport (Hells Gate and Lukenya). They both make for great day trips but if you prefer you can camp at Hells Gate and make a weekend out of it. Regarding gear prob best to bring your shoes and harness, although if you really tight on space i think these could be rented from the MCK (tbc if non member). Guide books are only available from the club which has a pub night Tuesdays. So prob best plan is to just come along the first Tuesday you are in town and hopefully there will be some other climbers there to coordinate trips. Failing that- post again when you arrive and hopefully you can join in with some of the other regulars who head out most weekends.

cheers
