<p style="color: #222222;">The 18th will be a climbing practice and training day starting from 9:30 AM. We foresee two groups:</p>
<ul style="color: #222222;">
<li>A beginners climbing area with top ropes set up for those with no experience or who are very new to climbing to get some experience.&nbsp;</li>
<li>A trad climbing group for those new to traditional lead climbing involving the placing of protect and building of anchors. For this group we will arrange for one or two experienced climbers to join in the climbing to provide guidance and tips.</li>
</ul>
<p style="color: #222222;">At the end of the day, we will adjourn to the summit camping area. Those interested in camping will need to form small groups and arrange, tents, food and cooking. We will arrange for two security personnel and the cost of security will need to be shared among those camping.&nbsp;</p>
<p style="color: #222222;">On Sunday the 19th, the Mini-dash will be held. See attachement.</p>
<p style="color: #222222;">If you are just planning to come for either or both of the day events (not camp) you should be prepared with lots of water, a picnic lunch, hats, sunscreen, etc. For the training day, we will bring all the shoes, harasses, helmets, ropes, etc needed. The training day is free for members and 400 Ksh for non-members. Personal gear (harnesses, shoes and helmet or any combination thereof) are rented at one charge of 300 Ksh for the weekend per person.&nbsp;</p>

<div id="_mcePaste">So those wishing to take breakfast, please drive in an hour earlier so that we do not delay.&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">ITINERARY:&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The drive will take about 3 hours. We take the Nairobi Nakuru highway and turn off on the Old Naivasha&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">road. &nbsp; At Mai Mahiu, we will turn left on to the Narok road and pick up the guide. At this juncture, &nbsp;we&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">will form the convoy and anyone who is driving should know how to get from Java at ABC place to the&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Narok road turn off in Mai Mahiu. &nbsp; After the big satellite earth station, we will turn left on to a series of&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">unpaved roads that lead up into the crater. &nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">On arrival at the caves, we can take a break for &nbsp;lunch and explore some caves. &nbsp; Please bring a torch for&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">the cave visit and the Baboon Parliament! &nbsp; After lunch, we drive further into the Caldera and &nbsp;see how &nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">the Maasai make water from the geothermal steam and then proceed to the campsite on the rim of the&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">inner crater. &nbsp; &nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">If there are a few hours of daylight left anyone with rock climbing/mountaineering experience and gear&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">could attempt to descend into the inner crater to the island. Anyone who wants to do this should come&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">with adequate gear and a panga. &nbsp; The rest will set up camp for overnight stay. &nbsp; We will camp on the rim&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">of the crater.&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Early next morning we will take an easy hike up to the summit. This should take 2‐3 hours. &nbsp; The&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">experienced climbers can do the hike round the crater which should take approximately 9hrs. &nbsp;After&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">lunch, we return to Nairobi.</div>
<div></div>
<div>
<div>CAMPING:&nbsp;</div>
<div>The campsite has no water (carry your own), &nbsp;but the Maasai will provide firewood for a few hundred&nbsp;</div>
<div>shillings. &nbsp; There may be washroom facilities and no danger from animals. Please &nbsp;organise cooking&nbsp;</div>
<div>arrangements with the other people riding in their cars. Every vehicle needs to be self sufficient in terms&nbsp;</div>
<div>of camping and cooking gear. As a general principle, a guide has been organized, &nbsp;but this is not a guided&nbsp;</div>
<div>tour and people are responsible for their own situation, safety, first aid kits, medication, etc.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>VEHICLES:&nbsp;</div>
<div>You need a vehicle with a bit of clearance to get up the track from the Narok road to the crater. It does&nbsp;</div>
<div>not have to be 4wd, but is good to have a sturdy vehicle. &nbsp; We will know the weather and condition of&nbsp;</div>
<div>the tracks nearer the time. &nbsp; We will car pool and anyone who has extra space in their car should reply to&nbsp;</div>
<div>all stating how much space they have. Anyone who needs a ride should reply to all requesting for space&nbsp;</div>
<div>in a vehicle. &nbsp; You may organise yourselves and share out the cost of the fuel.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>FEES:&nbsp;</div>
<div>Suswa is community managed so the enforcement of the fees can differ. &nbsp; So far the known estimated&nbsp;</div>
<div>rates are as follows:‐&nbsp;</div>
<div>Conservation Fee &nbsp;Kshs 500/‐ per person per day &nbsp;</div>
<div>Vehicle Fee &nbsp; &nbsp; Kshs 500/‐ per vehicle&nbsp;</div>
<div>Camping Fee &nbsp; &nbsp;Kshs 500/‐ per person&nbsp;</div>
<div>Guide Fee &nbsp; &nbsp; Ksh2000/‐ for the whole group &nbsp;(estimated and to be divided equally)&nbsp;</div>
<div>MCK Guest fees for Non‐Members &nbsp;‐ Kshs 400/‐ per day which makes Ksh800/‐ plus the above.&nbsp;</div>
<div>Therefore Non‐ Members coming with their own vehicle will pay all the fees i.e, &nbsp;</div>
<div>Kshs1000+500+500+200+800 = Kshs3000/‐. &nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>REQUIREMENTS:&nbsp;</div>
<div>Please feel free to email me for any questions you may have. &nbsp; I will require your &nbsp;full names, &nbsp;mobile&nbsp;</div>
<div>numbers and vehicle description (make, model, color, reg) of everyone who is driving &nbsp;in advance in order&nbsp;</div>
<div>to plan ahead. &nbsp;<strong>Deadline to let me know if you will be coming is Tuesday, January 10th.</strong></div>
<div>Happy Hiking!&nbsp;</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">This trip is a two‐day traverse covering the southern end of the Aberdares Park that is rarely done in&nbsp;</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">will camp on the moorlands just below this summit at about 3900 meters. The night will be cold and&nbsp;</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">One the second day, we will proceed down the ridge to the North in the direction of Mutubio Gate. We&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">will be in open country with an obvious trail for 2 hours. Then we will enter the bamboo forest and&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">traverse three smaller hills in the course of the day. In our last trip, we followed an obvious line following&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">the highest points on the West side of the Aberdares plateau using remanents of an old trial marked on&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">the map and game trails. &nbsp;</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">Figure 5: The hike follows the ridge through the forest over the three small hills to Mutubio Gate&nbsp;</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">We have a GPS track for our previous route and will be able to improve on this route. This mid‐section of&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">the hike requires good route finding even on bright sunny days! As we traverse the last hill, the train&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">becomes distinct and leads us to the gate through mixed brush and open country. As we have a GPS track,&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">we should be able to complete this day in 7 to 8 hours if we can keep a good pace. The walking on this day&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">is relatively easy, but long. We will need to arrange for at least one car to meet us at Mutubio gate.&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">It is a moderately demanding hike requiring a full pack and as it is a traverse through remote forest and&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">moorlands, the group will need to stay together. It is very worthwhile. Two rangers will be required and&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">to our knowledge, porters are not available. Given the weather, we should not need to carry extra water,&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">so pack weights should be moderate. Those interested will need to arrange shared tents and high altitude&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">cooking stuff to keep weight down. We suggest you informally form groups for that.&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Having completed Satima from the North Gate, and Njabini to Mutubio Gate, the next outing to be&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">consider is a traverse of the Aberdares from one‐end to the other!&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Costs: Usual Park Fees payable in cash at Njabini. This is entry for two days and camping fees. Check the KWS website for fees for your personal situation (Citizen, residents, tourists, etc).&nbsp; We will need two rangers, this will&nbsp;be 12,000 KSH divided between the participants. &nbsp;&nbsp;</div>
