15th February 2011 : Movie Night - Alone across Australia

In 2001 Jon Muir and his dog, Seraphine, began an odyssey to cross Australia on foot, from the cost of South Asutralia to the north coast of Queensland. 128 days and 2,500 kilometers later, Jon arrived in Burketown, becoming the first person to walk solo and unassisted across the continent of Australia.

Jon Muir is no stranger to extreme adventures. He has climbed Mt. Everest, walked to the South Pole and the North Pole, paddled alone in a sea kayak to the tip of Cape York; but this solo walk, which took him across four of the driest deserts in the world, was to be his toughest challenge to date. His only equipment was two trekking poles and a homemade cart, containing a a few essentials, which he pulled behind him. The bulk of his food came from what he could hunt or gather along the way. Alone Across Australia is a film about Jon's epic and spiritual journey into the heart and soul of Austalia.

22nd January : Minidash at Lukenya

The “Mini-Dash” rock climbing competition is a shorter alternative to the annual “Maxi-Dash.” The objective of the Mini Dash is for teams of two people to score as many points as possible by successfully climbing set climbs in Lukenya.

All MCK members and guests, including non climbers, are welcome to spectate the competition. Once the Mini Dash is over, all are invited to camp on the Lukenya grounds on Saturday night, so don’t forget to bring your tents, drinks, and food. A great opportunity to convene round the file and recount tales of the day.

The Three Poles: North Pole, South Pole and Everest by Satyabrata Dam

Louis Leakey Auditorium, National Museums of Kenya
7pm, Tuesday, January 11, 2011.

The only man on the planet to have led successful expeditions to the north and south poles and to Everest, Satya has summited Everest three times, climbed the seven summits and has logged over 350 major summits around the globe - many of them first ascents and new routes. A retired Indian Navy submarine commander, he is former Indian national yachting champion, has sailed around the world and walked across the African continent.

Satya’s true passion lies in the sport of extreme mountaineering - charting new routes, undertaking highly technical climbs and exploring unknown valleys. Applying his experience in some of the deepest, most remote corners of the world, he now works as a motivational speaker and writer and continues to lead mountaineering and other outdoor adventure expeditions. He is a member of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation’s Scientific Exploration Committee and is currently working with TERI (The Energy Resources Institute) Glacier Project Team. Satya also collaborates with Icelandic Glacier Studies on climate change and the effects of global warming. Satya is a two-time recipient of the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry), the Chief of Naval Staff Commendation (twice), the Commander-in-Chief Commendation and the Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award.

MCK member price KES 500, non-members KES 800. More details in the flyers below.

23rd to 27th/28th December : Ndotos with Ivy and Henrik

Ndotos Mountain Range in Northern Kenya is yet another testament to Kenya's vast outdoor beauty. We plan to pitch base camp from 23rd to 27th/28th December on the Milgis Lugga, which is a strategic point between the Ndotos and Mathew ranges and from where we'll conduct day hikes in that area. Peaks on Ndotos range from 2507m for the southern most range, 2635m at the center and 2534m at the northern most range. We will be able to see Baio on the far eastern side of the Ndotos at 1751m. Mathews Ranges start from 2068m on the southern most range, on to 2285m, 2375m, then down to 2288m on the northern most tip (closest to our base camp). We plan, time permitting, to explore most of the Ndotos ranges and extend onto Mathews when we can.

Distance: Nairobi to Laisamis is about 400km. Estimate from Laisamis to proposed base camp 100km giving a total of 500km (about 8hours drive). Last stop for fuel is Isolo, but remember our new fantastic super highway is now complete to Merille, where the tarmac ends and rough roads begins.

Closing date for interested parties is Tuesday 21st Dec 2010. Contact Ivy, imutiso@yahoo.com
